The most physically distinctive Norris Trophy winner — the bearded giant who transformed the defenceman position.
Brent Burns was born in Ajax, Ontario in 1985. Minnesota Wild selected him 20th overall in the 2003 NHL Draft. His career has produced 303 goals and 657 assists for 960 career points — among the most by an active defenceman. He won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman in 2017. He was selected to eight All-Star games. He began his career as a forward before transitioning permanently to defence — a switch that made him the highest-scoring defenceman of his era. His physical appearance — enormous beard, missing teeth, keeper of exotic pets — made him one of hockey's most distinctive personalities. He scored 29 goals in 2017-18 from the blue line. His combination of size, skating ability and offensive instincts produces a playing style that resembles no other defenceman — he pinches offensively, drives at the net and produces shooting statistics that only point guards in basketball routinely achieve. He relocated to Carolina in 2022 and continued producing at above-average levels approaching age 40.
