BD — the most explosive point guard of his era and the leader of the greatest upset in modern NBA playoff history.
Baron Walter Davis was born in Los Angeles, California in 1979 and attended the University of California, Los Angeles before Charlotte Hornets selected him third overall in the 1999 NBA Draft. His 13-season career produced 16.1 points, 7.1 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game along with two All-Star appearances. His most celebrated season came with the Golden State Warriors in 2006-07 — he led an eighth-seeded team past the Dallas Mavericks, who had won 67 regular season games, in one of the greatest upsets in NBA playoff history. His thunderous dunk over Andrei Kirilenko of the Utah Jazz in the 2007 playoffs — from well outside the restricted area — became one of the most replayed dunks of the YouTube era and perfectly encapsulated his explosive athleticism. His combination of size (6ft 3in), strength, passing ability and shot-creation made him one of the most complete point guards of his generation during his peak years. He won Olympic gold with the USA in 2000. Off the court he became an active film producer and entrepreneur, founding his own media company and production studio. Injuries — particularly to his knees — prevented him from sustaining his peak for a prolonged period. He retired in 2012.
