Three-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medallist who ended Germany's long wait for a women's major.
Angelique Kerber was born on 18 January 1988 in Bremen, Germany. She turned professional in 2003 and spent years developing before breaking through with an extraordinary 2016 season in which she won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open and won Olympic silver. She also won Wimbledon in 2018. In total Kerber won four Grand Slam titles. Known for her exceptional defence, sliding movement, and ability to construct points rather than hit outright winners, she proved that mental strength could overcome raw power. She retired in 2023 after announcing her pregnancy.
Australian Open 2016
In 2016 she won three Grand Slams in one calendar year — Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open — only the third woman in the Open Era to do so.
