Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr. was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1977, son of former professional Floyd Mayweather Sr., and retired with a perfect professional record of 50 wins (27 by knockout) and 0 losses across a career spanning 1996 to 2017. He won Olympic bronze in Atlanta in 1996 before turning professional and winning world championships in five weight divisions — junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight — defending world titles 27 times. His defensive style — the Philly Shell — combined with elite reflexes, counter-punching and ring intelligence made him virtually impossible to hurt cleanly for 21 years. His 2015 fight against Manny Pacquiao — promoted as the Fight of the Century and generating $600 million — was a tactical masterclass in controlling distance. His 2017 crossover fight against UFC star Conor McGregor generated $550 million and concluded with a 10th-round TKO. He earned over $1 billion from boxing across his career — the highest total by any combat sport athlete.
