Troy Nathan Terry was born on 10 September 1997 in Denver, Colorado, and grew up in the nearby suburb of Highlands Ranch, beginning to play hockey at just four years old and skating with older age groups by six, earning the nickname "Coach Troy" during his mini-mite career. During the 2004-05 NHL lockout, Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic coached Terry's youth hockey team and was impressed by his puck-handling ability, reportedly saying he could "stick-handle in a phone booth," an early sign of the skill that would define his career. The Anaheim Ducks selected Terry in the fifth round, 148th overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft, and he developed into one of the franchise's most reliable offensive players, becoming a key contributor and eventual captain of the Ducks. Terry has continued to represent the United States internationally and remains one of Anaheim's most important veteran leaders, renowned for his skilled offensive game and consistent production across nearly a decade with the franchise.
