American IndyCar Series driver and two-time series champion, known for his aggressive racing style and back-to-back Indianapolis 500 victories in 2023-2024.
Josef Nicolai Newgarden was born on 22 December 1991 in Nashville, Tennessee, and made his IndyCar Series debut at the 2012 Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, developing into one of the most successful American open-wheel drivers of his generation. Newgarden won his first IndyCar race at the 2015 Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park, and joined Team Penske in 2017, immediately winning his first series championship that season before adding a second title in 2019. Newgarden delivered the signature achievement of his career by winning the Indianapolis 500 in both 2023 and 2024, becoming just the fourth driver in the race's history to win in consecutive years, a feat that cemented his status among the sport's elite. Newgarden has continued to compete at the front of the IndyCar grid for Team Penske, remaining one of the most consistently competitive American drivers in open-wheel racing across more than a decade at the sport's highest level.
