Wyndham Clark was born on 9 December 1993 in Denver, Colorado, and was introduced to golf at just three by his mother, Lise, a former Miss New Mexico USA and gifted all-around athlete, who took him to a local driving range. His mother battled breast cancer twice, first being declared cancer-free in 2001 before the disease returned in 2012 during Wyndham's freshman year at Oklahoma State University. Clark was a few shots off the lead at the Western Amateur when he received the call that his mother's condition had worsened; he withdrew immediately to fly home, and she died just 20 hours later, on 2 August 2013, at 55. The grief that followed led him to take a medical hardship redshirt from college golf, questioning whether to continue in the sport at all. Clark turned professional in 2017 after graduating from the University of Oregon, and delivered a breakthrough 2023 season, winning the Wells Fargo Championship before capturing his first major title at the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, a victory he dedicated to his mother's memory, recalling her final instruction to him to "play big." Clark won a second U.S. Open title in 2026, becoming a two-time major champion, and has continued to draw motivation from his mother throughout his career, keeping her memory close as the driving force behind his achievements in the sport she first introduced him to.
