Arsenal's dominant French captain who embodied the Invincibles midfield with a combination of power, skill and leadership.
Patrick Vieira was born in Dakar, Senegal in 1976 and moved to France as a child, developing through the football system before AC Milan signed him in 1995. Arsène Wenger brought him to Arsenal in August 1996 for £3.5 million — one of the finest pieces of transfer business in Premier League history. His nine seasons at Highbury produced 279 appearances and three Premier League titles (1998, 2002, 2004) plus four FA Cups. His combination of power, technical ability, vision and extraordinary leadership made him the finest defensive midfielder of his generation. He captained Arsenal to the Invincibles campaign of 2003-04 — the unbeaten Premier League season. He scored the decisive penalty in the 2005 FA Cup final shootout against Manchester United. He joined Juventus in 2005, won Serie A, then moved to Inter Milan where he won four consecutive Serie A titles (2006-09). He earned 107 France caps, scoring 6 goals, and won the World Cup in 1998 and European Championship in 2000. He retired in 2011. His management career took him to New York City FC (2016-18), Nice (2018-20) and Crystal Palace (2021-23). His midfield battles with Roy Keane — intense, physical, technically outstanding — are among the Premier League's defining images. He remains one of the finest midfielders the Premier League has seen.
