Claude Makélélé Sinda was born on 18 February 1973 in Kinshasa, then part of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), the son of André-Joseph Makélélé, who also played football professionally. The family moved to Savigny-le-Temple, a Paris suburb, when Claude was four, and he signed his first club contract with Sporting Melun-Dammarie at 15 before progressing through Brest and into professional football with Nantes in 1991. Makélélé developed into the finest holding midfielder of his generation, a position requiring far more subtlety than raw physical presence — his game was built on exceptional positioning, anticipation, and the ability to break up opposition attacks before they developed, allowing more creative teammates the freedom to attack. After spells at Marseille and Celta Vigo, he joined Real Madrid in 2000, arriving in time to start in the Champions League final that year as Los Blancos beat Valencia to win "La Novena," the club's ninth European Cup. Despite Real Madrid's continued success, including two La Liga titles during his tenure, Makélélé's sale to Chelsea in 2003 became one of the most debated transfers of the era — then-Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez was later widely criticised for underestimating the defensive midfielder's importance to the team's balance, with Real Madrid's form notably suffering after his departure.
