Timothy Cheruiyot was born on 20 November 1995 in Bomet, Kenya, and grew up in the small settlement of Singorwet, living on a family farm before beginning serious training with the Rongai Athletics Club near Nairobi under coach Bernard Ouma starting in 2014. Cheruiyot developed into one of the finest 1500 metres runners in history, winning the world title at the 2019 World Championships with a dominant front-running performance, and remains the 11th fastest athlete of all time over the distance. Cheruiyot won the Diamond League 1500m title four times, in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021, and took the silver medal in the event at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, cementing his position among the sport's elite middle-distance runners for the best part of a decade. Cheruiyot has continued competing at the top level of world athletics well into his thirties, remaining one of Kenya's most consistently successful middle-distance runners and a fixture on the global Diamond League circuit across multiple events.
