Set women's marathon WR in Chicago 2019.
Brigid Jepchirchir Kosgei was born on 20 February 1994 in Sinon, Kapsowar, Kenya, one of seven children raised by a single mother in the Rift Valley, and discovered her running talent, like many Kenyan athletes, through the daily necessity of jogging to and from school. Kosgei began training with her future husband, Matthew Mitei, at 17, and finished in the top two in eight of her first nine marathons, quickly establishing herself as one of the finest distance runners in the world. Kosgei delivered a historic performance at the 2019 Chicago Marathon, smashing Paula Radcliffe's 16-year-old world record by 81 seconds to finish in 2:14:04, a run that came just a day after fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge became the first person to run a marathon in under two hours. Kosgei won back-to-back London Marathons in 2019 and 2020, becoming the youngest-ever winner of the race at 25, and added the Tokyo Marathon title in 2022 along with an Olympic silver medal at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games, remaining one of the most successful female marathon runners in history.
