Simone Forbes

Jamaican international who captained the Sunshine Girls and earned more than 100 appearances for Jamaica.

Simone Nagina Forbes was born on 20 June 1981 in Jamaica, and attended Excelsior High School before studying at G.C. Foster College and later Mercy College in the United States, where she received a volleyball scholarship in 2005. She is one of the most versatile athletes in Jamaican sporting history, having represented the country internationally in five different sports: netball, volleyball, basketball, football, and softball. Forbes played netball for Jamaica's under-21 team in 1998 before making her senior debut for the Sunshine Girls the following year, going on to win bronze medals at the 2003 and 2007 World Netball Championships and the 2002 Commonwealth Games, along with a silver medal at the inaugural 2009 World Netball Series and a further bronze in 2010. Forbes captained the Sunshine Girls for much of her later career and was chosen as Jamaica's flag bearer at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. In 2005, she received Jamaica's Prime Minister's National Youth Award for Excellence in the Field of Sports, having already been named G.C. Foster College's Sportswoman of the Year in 2002. Forbes tested positive for a banned fertility-related substance during an out-of-competition drug test, a case that drew scrutiny during her career, though she continued to be recognised as one of the most gifted and versatile multi-sport athletes Jamaica has produced, playing domestic netball for Waulgrovians Sports Club.
