Shelley O'Donnell was born on 18 April 1967 in Victoria, into one of Australian netball's most storied families — her great-great-aunt and several great-uncles were prominent VFL players for Geelong, while her father Graeme and brother Gary both played senior football. She came through Victoria's club system with the Australian Institute of Sport before establishing herself in the Esso/Mobil Superleague era, playing for composite sides including Melbourne City, alongside teammates Simone McKinnis and Roselee Jencke, under coach Norma Plummer. O'Donnell played 84 Tests for Australia between 1990 and 1999 as a wing attack and centre, winning gold at three consecutive World Netball Championships — 1991, 1995 and 1999, serving as vice-captain in her final tournament — as well as gold at the 1993 World Games and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. She was the inaugural captain of the Melbourne Kestrels from 1997 to 2000 in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, stepping away from the game twice around the births of her two children before a final season in 2005. O'Donnell was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1992 alongside the rest of the gold medal-winning 1991 World Championship squad, and was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame in 2010. Her daughter Hannah Mundy has since gone on to play for the Melbourne Vixens.
