One of only a handful of players to win three consecutive World Netball Championship gold medals, Shelley O'Donnell served as vice-captain of the Australian Diamonds at the 1999 tournament and captained the Melbourne Kestrels in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy's inaugural season. She came through Victoria's club system with the Australian Institute of Sport before establishing herself in the Esso/Mobil Superleague era, playing for composite sides including Melbourne City, alongside teammates Simone McKinnis and Roselee Jencke, under coach Norma Plummer. O'Donnell played 84 Tests for Australia between 1990 and 1999 as a wing attack and centre, winning gold at three consecutive World Netball Championships — 1991, 1995 and 1999, serving as vice-captain in her final tournament — as well as gold at the 1993 World Games and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. She was the inaugural captain of the Melbourne Kestrels from 1997 to 2000 in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, stepping away from the game twice around the births of her two children before a final season in 2005. O'Donnell was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1992 alongside the rest of the gold medal-winning 1991 World Championship squad, and was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame in 2010. Her daughter Hannah Mundy has since gone on to play for the Melbourne Vixens.
