Carla Borrego (née Williams) was born on 11 November 1983 in Green Island, Hanover, Jamaica, and represented her country at the 2003 World Netball Championships in Kingston at just 19, finishing as the tournament's second-highest scorer. She then paused her netball career to study and play college basketball in the United States, first at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale before earning a scholarship to the University of Miami. Borrego returned to netball in 2009, signing with the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the ANZ Championship, where her height and shooting accuracy made her one of the competition's most dangerous attacking options — she was the league's highest goal scorer in her debut 2010 season, a premiership-winning year for the Thunderbirds, and helped them to a second title in 2013. She became an Australian citizen during her time in Adelaide and retired from elite netball in 2016 after a series of knee operations, finishing as the Thunderbirds' all-time leading scorer and seventh on the all-time list for the trans-Tasman competition.
