Samuel Holland Burns was born on 23 July 1996 in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Todd and Beth Burns, and was introduced to golf at four years old by his older brother, Chase, who handed him an eight-iron in the family's backyard; Sam's very first swing travelled 70 yards, stunning both his brother and father. His father and brother had both played football at Louisiana Tech, and his mother initially hoped Sam would follow them onto the gridiron rather than the golf course. Burns starred at Calvary Baptist Academy, becoming a three-time individual state champion and helping the school win five consecutive Louisiana state titles, before earning AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year honours in 2014 and playing college golf at Louisiana State University. Burns turned professional in 2017 and has won five times on the PGA Tour, reaching a career-high world ranking of ninth, and has represented the United States in Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup competition, developing into one of the most consistent American players of his generation. Burns has continued to compete at the top level of the PGA Tour, remaining based close to his Louisiana roots in Choudrant, and continues building a family with his wife, Caroline, whom he met as a childhood Valentine at just five years old.
