Ryan James Kesler was born on 31 August 1984 in Livonia, Michigan, and chose to join the USA Hockey National Team Development Program over playing for the Brampton Battalion, who had drafted him in the OHL, due to its close proximity to his hometown. The Vancouver Canucks selected Kesler 23rd overall in the 2003 NHL Draft, and he spent the first decade of his NHL career with the franchise, developing into one of the league's most respected two-way centres. Kesler won the Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward in 2011, helping lead the Canucks to the Stanley Cup Final that same season, and was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in 2014, where he spent the remainder of his career. Kesler represented the United States internationally throughout his career, citing childhood idol Joe Sakic as an inspiration, and retired in 2019 as one of the most complete and physically committed two-way forwards of his generation.
