Mathew Michael Paul Barzal was born on 26 May 1997 in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, and was selected first overall by the Seattle Thunderbirds in the 2012 WHL bantam draft, going on to record 54 points in his rookie junior season. The New York Islanders selected Barzal in the first round, 16th overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft, and he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie in 2017-18, becoming the fifth Islander in franchise history to receive the honour. Barzal developed into one of the league's most electrifying offensive players, renowned for his exceptional edgework and vision, and has continued to be the centrepiece of the Islanders' forward group across nearly a decade with the franchise.
