Jonquel Orthea Jones was born on 5 January 1994 in Freeport, The Bahamas, and attended Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, before beginning her college career at Clemson and transferring to George Washington University, where she was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in 2015. The Los Angeles Sparks selected Jones sixth overall in the 2016 WNBA Draft, but she was traded to the Connecticut Sun, where she developed into one of the league's most dominant rebounders and shot-blockers, winning WNBA Most Improved Player in 2017 and the MVP award in 2021. Jones built an extensive overseas career across South Korea, China, Turkey, and Russia, winning championships with UMMC Ekaterinburg, and was named Bosnian Sportswoman of the Year in 2021, reflecting her Bosnian heritage through her father's side of the family. Jones signed with the New York Liberty in 2023, winning the WNBA championship and Finals MVP honours in 2024, continuing to be one of the most statistically dominant and internationally accomplished players in the modern women's game.
