Both of Jonathan Kuminga's parents played basketball in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — a lineage that produced a player who won an NBA championship as a 19-year-old rookie in 2022 and has since followed Dikembe Mutombo's example of public advocacy for communities in his homeland.. He moved to the United States in 2016 to pursue high school basketball, attending Huntington Prep in West Virginia before transferring to schools in New York and New Jersey. Kuminga reclassified to the 2020 class, bypassing his senior year of high school to join the NBA G League Ignite programme, forgoing college basketball entirely in favour of professional development.
