Romania's greatest tennis player and 1978 French Open champion — the first Romanian to win a Grand Slam singles title, Ruzici's clay-court brilliance and athletic style helped open doors for Eastern European women's tennis in the late 1970s.
Virginia Ruzici was born in Câmpia Turzii, Romania in 1952 and became the first Romanian to win a Grand Slam title — the French Open in 1978, defeating Mima Jaušovec in a straightforward final 6-2, 6-2 at Roland Garros. She was the dominant Romanian player of the 1970s and early 1980s, winning 15 career titles with a 350-172 win-loss record across a career spanning 1972 to 1986. She reached the French Open final again in 1980, losing to Chris Evert. She was a consistent presence in the top 20 of women's tennis through the late 1970s. Her clay-court ability was exceptional — reflecting Romania's tennis tradition on red clay — and her 1978 French Open victory placed her alongside the sport's finest clay-court specialists. She represented Romania in the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly Fed Cup) for many years. After retiring from professional tennis she became a successful sports agent, most notably representing Simona Halep through her rise to world number one and Grand Slam victories — contributing to Halep's career development alongside her own lasting legacy as Romania's first Grand Slam champion.
