William Steven Power was born on 1 March 1981 in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, to Bob Power, and progressed through Australian Formula Ford and Formula 3 before moving to Europe to compete in British Formula Three and the World Series by Renault. Power moved to North American open-wheel racing in 2005, winning Champ Car Rookie of the Year in 2006, and joined Team Penske in 2010, quickly establishing himself as one of the most dominant qualifiers in IndyCar history, repeatedly topping the series' Road Course Trophy standings between 2010 and 2015. Power won his first IndyCar Series championship in 2014, and delivered the signature achievement of his career in 2018, winning the Indianapolis 500 for the first time after years of near-misses at the sport's biggest race. Power won a second IndyCar Series title in 2022, becoming one of the most successful drivers in series history, and continues to compete for Andretti Global, having spent nearly two decades at the top level of American open-wheel racing since his rookie Champ Car season in 2005.
