Born in Rio de Janeiro on 1 April 1977, Vitor Belfort made his professional debut at 19, knocking out Jon Hess in just 12 seconds. He was quickly signed by the UFC and won the UFC 12 heavyweight tournament in February 1997, finishing both opponents in a combined two minutes of fight time. Belfort's early career included a first career loss to Randy Couture in 1997, a rivalry the two would revisit repeatedly. In 2004, Belfort defeated Couture for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 46 after a cut from his glove stopped the fight; Couture reclaimed the title in their immediate rematch later that year. Over more than two decades, Belfort compiled notable wins over Wanderlei Silva, Randy Couture, Rich Franklin, Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson, and challenged two of the sport's greatest champions, Anderson Silva and Jon Jones, for titles without success. In 2013, he had arguably his greatest year, knocking out Bisping, Rockhold and Henderson within an 11-month span, though the year also brought controversy over his legal use of testosterone-replacement therapy, a practice subsequently banned by regulators. Belfort also competed in Pride Fighting Championships and later in professional boxing exhibitions. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, closing a career recognized as one of the most explosive and enduring in MMA history.
