Wanderlei Silva

Brazilian legend who dominated PRIDE's middleweight division through the early 2000s and later became a UFC Hall of Fame pioneer-wing inductee.

Wanderlei César da Silva was born on 3 July 1976 in Curitiba, Brazil, and trained at the legendary Chute Boxe Academy, developing into one of the most feared and aggressive strikers in the history of mixed martial arts. Silva, nicknamed "The Axe Murderer," dominated Japan's PRIDE Fighting Championships throughout the early-to-mid 2000s, holding the promotion's middleweight (205-pound) championship and setting PRIDE records for most wins, most knockouts, most successful title defences, and the longest winning streak in the organisation's history. Silva moved to the UFC following PRIDE's closure, and continued to compete at the top level of the light heavyweight division, engaging in a celebrated rivalry with Chuck Liddell and remaining one of the sport's most popular attractions for his relentless, forward-pressure fighting style. Silva retired from competition in 2018 with a professional record built on an extraordinary run of knockout victories, and remains widely regarded as one of the most dominant and feared fighters of the sport's early Japanese era, his PRIDE-era records standing as a testament to a level of sustained dominance rarely matched since.

Silva was known for his extremely aggressive, forward-pressure fighting style, constantly moving forward and throwing powerful combinations. His muay thai background gave him devastating knees in the clinch and heavy hands that he used to overwhelm opponents. He relied on volume striking, cardio, and relentless aggression rather than technical precision.

Silva helped establish PRIDE FC as a premier MMA organization and became one of the sport's first true superstars with his exciting fighting style and charismatic personality.
