Thomas Paul Fleetwood was born on 19 January 1991 in Southport, Merseyside, England, and learned the game at his local municipal course before showing promise as a junior at Formby Hall Golf Club, often sneaking onto the nearby Royal Birkdale course with his father, Pete, as a child. Fleetwood enjoyed a decorated amateur career, winning the 2010 English Amateur and representing Great Britain and Ireland at the 2009 Walker Cup, before turning professional later that year and building a reputation as one of Europe's most consistent players. Fleetwood won the European Tour's Race to Dubai in 2017, and came agonisingly close to major championship glory on multiple occasions, finishing runner-up at both the 2018 U.S. Open, firing a final-round 63, and the 2019 Open Championship.
