Tom Kristensen was born on 7 July 1967 in Hobro, Denmark, and progressed through Formula Ford and Japanese Formula 3 before moving into sports car racing, developing into the most successful driver in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Kristensen, nicknamed "Mr. Le Mans," won the endurance classic on his very first attempt in 1997, and went on to win the race a record nine times in total, including a run of five consecutive victories between 2000 and 2005, and further wins in 2008 and 2013, driving for Audi's factory sports car programme across the majority of his triumphs. Kristensen also competed extensively in Germany's DTM touring car championship between 2004 and 2011, and won the inaugural FIA World Endurance Championship drivers' title in 2013, adding to a legacy built almost entirely around endurance racing's biggest events. Kristensen retired from full-time competition in 2014, and remains widely regarded as the greatest endurance racing driver in history, his nine Le Mans victories a record that stands well clear of any other competitor in the race's near-century of history.
