Tim Southee is New Zealand's all-time leading wicket-taker across formats, a right-arm swing bowler with a classical action who has been serving New Zealand cricket with distinction for over 15 years. His ability to swing the ball both ways and hit a consistent length has brought him over 700 international wickets. He is also a capable lower-order batsman and an excellent slip fielder. Southee stepped down as New Zealand's Test captain in 2024 after leading the side through a transitional period, having overtaken Richard Hadlee decades earlier as the country's all-time leading wicket-taker, and remained a first-choice bowler across formats deep into his thirties.

Southee is a swing bowler who excels at moving the ball both ways, particularly effective with the new ball in seaming conditions. He bowls at a lively pace and has developed excellent control over his length and line throughout his career. His height and smooth bowling action allow him to extract bounce and movement from most surfaces.
