Stephen Larkham was born on 29 May 1974 in Canberra, Australia, and attended Lyneham High School and Dickson College before studying at the Australian National University. He progressed through the ACT provincial system and became a foundation player for the Brumbies when the Super Rugby franchise launched in 1996. Larkham made his Wallabies debut that same year and developed into one of the most creative and unorthodox fly-halves in the history of Australian rugby, renowned for his flat, direct running style and ability to break the gain line himself rather than always distributing the ball wide. He was a key figure in Australia's victorious 1999 World Cup campaign, scoring a spectacular long-range drop goal in the semi-final against South Africa that remains one of the tournament's most memorable individual moments. Larkham captained the Wallabies on occasion and earned dozens of caps across an 11-year international career, helping the Brumbies win Super Rugby titles in 2001 and 2004, before finishing his playing career in Japan with the Ricoh Black Rams.
