Sifan Hassan was born on 1 January 1993 in Adama, Ethiopia, and fled to the Netherlands as a 15-year-old asylum seeker in 2008, initially living in a youth centre and struggling emotionally with the transition before finding solace through running while studying to become a nurse. Hassan became a Dutch citizen in 2013, allowing her to represent the Netherlands internationally, and developed into one of the most versatile distance runners in history, capable of competing at an elite level from the 1500m to the marathon. Hassan achieved an unprecedented distance treble at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, winning gold in the 5000m and 10,000m and bronze in the 1500m, becoming the first woman since Tirunesh Dibaba to complete the 5000m/10,000m double at a single Games. Hassan transitioned to marathon running and set a world record time in the women's marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, adding to her extraordinary medal collection, though questions about her past association with coach Alberto Salazar's disbanded training group have continued to follow her throughout her career.
