Femke Bol was born on 23 February 2000 in Amersfoort, Netherlands, and began athletics at her local club AV Triathlon at age eight, having initially practised judo before discovering her talent for running. Bol dominated age-group 400m competitions from 2015 to 2019, and won gold in the 400m hurdles at the 2019 European Under-20 Championships, before rapidly progressing to senior international success and winning bronze in the event at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Bol became the first woman in history to complete the 400m flat, 400m hurdles, and 4x400m relay treble at a major championship, achieving the feat at the 2022 European Championships in Munich, and went on to win the world title in the 400m hurdles at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. Bol holds the world record in the 400m short track and the European record in the 400m hurdles, and won Olympic gold in the mixed 4x400m relay at the 2024 Paris Games. She married fellow athlete Ben Broeders in 2026, and continues to be one of the most versatile and dominant one-lap runners in the sport.
