Shannon Lee Miller was born in Rolla, Missouri in 1977. She is the most decorated American gymnast — male or female — with seven Olympic medals. She won the World all-around championship in 1993. She won back-to-back World floor exercise titles in 1993 and 1994. Her balance beam performance at Atlanta 1996 — winning gold — is considered her defining individual achievement. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 — requiring surgery and chemotherapy — and has become an advocate for cancer awareness. She was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2006.
