Sam Mills was an undersized but hard-nosed linebacker who starred for the New Orleans Saints' famed 'Dome Patrol' before becoming an inspirational Carolina Panthers coach known for his 'Keep Pounding' battle with cancer.

Samuel Davis Mills Jr. was born on 3 June 1959 in Neptune City, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby Long Branch, winning district wrestling championships at Long Branch High School before playing college football at Division III Montclair State. Undrafted out of college, Mills spent three seasons with the Philadelphia and Baltimore Stars of the USFL, winning two championships, before joining the New Orleans Saints in 1986, where, despite standing just 5 feet 9 inches, he became the anchor of the legendary "Dome Patrol" linebacking corps. Mills earned five Pro Bowl selections and three first-team All-Pro honours across a 12-season NFL career split between the Saints and the expansion Carolina Panthers, whom he helped reach the 1996 NFC Championship Game as a veteran leader. Mills was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2003 while serving as a Panthers assistant coach, and famously delivered an emotional pregame speech during the team's 2003 playoff run, coining the phrase "Keep Pounding" that remains the franchise's rallying cry today. He died on 18 April 2005, at age 45, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022, with a statue of him standing outside the Panthers' stadium.
