Ryan Crouser was born on 18 December 1992 in Portland, Oregon, and grew up in the small town of Boring, into a family of accomplished throwers; his father, Mitch, was an alternate on the 1984 U.S. Olympic discus team, and his uncles Dean and Brian were both multiple-time NCAA and Olympic-level throwers. Crouser starred at the University of Texas, winning four NCAA titles in the shot put, before winning his first Olympic gold at the 2016 Rio Games with an Olympic record throw, becoming the first American shot put champion since 2004. Crouser broke the outdoor shot put world record twice, first in 2021 and again in 2023 with a throw of 23.56 metres, a mark that remains the farthest ever recorded, and also holds the indoor world record. Crouser became the first shot putter in history to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals, completing the feat at the 2024 Paris Games despite battling significant elbow and pectoral injuries throughout the preceding year, and has continued to dominate the event as its most decorated and accomplished thrower.
