Ronan John Ross O'Gara was born on 7 March 1977 in San Diego, California, where his father, Fergal, an Irish former rugby player, was completing a post-doctoral fellowship in microbiology. The family returned to Ireland, and O'Gara was raised in Cork, attending Presentation Brothers College before playing for University College Cork and Cork Constitution. O'Gara made his Munster debut in 1997 and became one of the most decorated fly-halves in the history of Irish and European rugby, renowned for his composed goal-kicking and tactical game management. He was the architect of two of the most celebrated moments in Munster's history, kicking the province to Heineken Cup titles in 2006 and 2008. O'Gara earned over 120 caps for Ireland between 2000 and 2013, becoming the country's all-time leading points scorer, and toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2001, 2005, and 2009. His dramatic late drop goal against Wales in the 2009 Six Nations sealed Ireland's first Grand Slam in 61 years, one of the defining moments of his international career. O'Gara retired in 2013 and moved directly into coaching, serving as defence coach at Racing 92 and assistant coach at the Crusaders before becoming head coach of France's La Rochelle in 2019. He has guided La Rochelle to three European Cup finals, winning back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023 — the club's first-ever major silverware.
