Patty Sheehan was born on 27 October 1956 in Middlebury, Vermont, and was rated one of the top junior skiers in the United States at just 13 before focusing her competitive energy on golf, winning four consecutive Nevada Amateur titles beginning at 18 in 1975. Sheehan won the California Amateur in both 1978 and 1979, was runner-up at the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1979, and captured the national collegiate championship in 1980 while playing for San Jose State, before turning professional that same year. Sheehan won six major championships across her career, becoming the only player besides Mickey Wright to win back-to-back LPGA Championships, and delivered her most satisfying victories at the U.S. Women's Open in both 1992 and 1994, having finished runner-up in the event three previous times. Sheehan was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1993, and was named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year in 1987, finishing her career with 35 LPGA Tour titles and remaining widely regarded as one of the most technically consistent players of her generation, later hosting charity tournaments to support women's and children's causes in Nevada.
