Davis Milton Love III was born on 13 April 1964 in Charlotte, North Carolina, into a golfing family; his father, Davis Love Jr., was a respected professional and teacher, and his mother was a low-handicap amateur, giving Davis a grounding in the sport from childhood that convinced him by age ten he wanted to become a professional golfer. Love starred at the University of North Carolina, becoming a three-time All-American and the 1984 Atlantic Coast Conference champion, and represented the United States at the 1985 Walker Cup before turning professional later that year. Love won his sole major championship at the 1997 PGA Championship at Winged Foot, a dominant victory that came under a rainbow he later described as evoking the spiritual presence of his father, who had died in a plane crash nearly a decade earlier. Love won 21 PGA Tour titles, including two Players Championships, and spent over 450 weeks inside the world's top ten, reaching a career-high ranking of second. He captained the U.S. Ryder Cup team in both 2012 and 2016, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017, having endured open-heart surgery in his later years while remaining active in senior competition.
