Patrice Latyr Evra was born on 15 May 1981 in Dakar, Senegal, the son of a Senegalese diplomat father and a Cape Verdean mother, one of an extraordinarily large family of around 25 siblings. The family moved to Brussels when Evra was one year old before settling in Les Ulis, a Paris suburb, when he was three, and Evra grew up fluent in multiple languages, inherited from his diplomat father's linguistic background. Evra began his professional career in Italy's lower divisions with Marsala and Monza before returning to France with Nice, where he was converted from a winger into a left-back — a positional switch that would define the rest of his career. He joined Monaco in 2002, helping the principality club reach the 2004 Champions League final, before Manchester United signed him in January 2006. Evra spent eight seasons at Manchester United, becoming club captain and one of the finest left-backs of his generation, renowned for his attacking overlaps, defensive reliability, and vocal leadership in the dressing room. He won five Premier League titles, three League Cups, and the 2008 Champions League, and was named to the PFA Team of the Year on three occasions. He also captained the France national team, earning 81 caps between 2004 and 2016. After Manchester United, Evra moved to Juventus in 2014, winning two further Serie A titles and reaching another Champions League final, before finishing his career with spells at Marseille and West Ham United.
