Pamela Cookey

A goal attack who played for England from 2004-2015 and captained the national team, also playing professionally in New Zealand's ANZ Championship.

Pamela Asibie Cookey was born on 2 September 1984 in Birmingham. A surprise call-up to the England squad at just 17 for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, she was ruled out by a knee injury sustained in preparation, and made her senior international debut on 18 September 2004 against Australia, only to rupture her other ACL two minutes into the match. Cookey recovered to become one of the finest attacking players of her generation, representing England from 2004 to 2015 and playing primarily at goal attack, with the ability to also shoot from goal shooter. She won Commonwealth Games bronze medals in 2006 and 2010, and World Cup bronze medals in 2011 and 2015. She captained England during a 2013 series whitewash of Australia, and announced her retirement from international netball immediately after England's bronze-medal finish at the 2015 World Cup in Sydney, her second World Cup medal. Domestically, Cookey spent close to a decade with Team Bath from the Netball Superleague's launch in 2005, winning five titles, before adding further titles with Surrey Storm to become the only player to win seven Superleague championships. She retired from all netball in 2016 and became Director of Netball at the University of Gloucestershire, overseeing the new Severn Stars franchise, and has since worked extensively as a Sky Sports and BBC pundit.
