Serena Guthrie was born on 5 January 1990 in Jersey. She made her senior England debut in 2008 at just 17, quickly establishing herself as one of the finest midcourters in the world, known for her speed, athleticism and eye for the intercept. Guthrie played for Team Bath until 2015, winning four Superleague titles, before spells with New Zealand's Northern Mystics and Australia's Giants Netball, where she was named club MVP in 2017. She was part of the England team that won a historic gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, and the following year was appointed captain by coach Tracey Neville to lead the Vitality Roses at a home World Cup in Liverpool, becoming only the third captain in history to lead England at a World Cup on home soil. She steered the team to a bronze medal. Guthrie reached her 100th cap in October 2020 against New Zealand, calling it one of the best memories of her career. She retired in March 2022 with 110 caps and 28 as captain, after announcing her pregnancy, ending a 14-year international career. She later returned to Jersey, working in netball performance and business coaching, before being elected as a Senator in the States Assembly at the 2026 Jersey general election.
