Shamera Sterling-Humphrey was born on 21 October 1995 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and has described netball as an escape during a difficult childhood when her father was in prison. She made her senior international debut for the Sunshine Girls in 2016, before signing with Loughborough Lightning in England's Netball Superleague in 2018, where she recorded 101 intercepts and won both the Players' Player and League Player of the Season awards. Sterling-Humphrey moved to Australia's Super Netball in 2019, joining Adelaide Thunderbirds. She was part of the Jamaican squad that won bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and starred as Jamaica won their first-ever Commonwealth Games silver medal at Birmingham 2022, defeating Australia in the group stage — a first in the teams' history — and New Zealand in the semi-final before falling to Australia in the final. She also won World Cup bronze with Jamaica at Cape Town 2023. Sterling-Humphrey led the Thunderbirds to their first Super Netball premiership in a decade in 2023, leading the league with 118 deflections and being named Suncorp Super Netball Player of the Year. She has since captained the Thunderbirds to further premierships, including a third title in 2026 following her return from maternity leave after the birth of her first child in October 2025. She was named Jamaica's national captain in December 2024, and has been open about her experience with postpartum depression as part of her return to top-level competition.
