McLaren's Australian star — F2 and F3 champion who won his first race in 2024 and challenged for the title.
Oscar Jack Piastri was born in Melbourne, Australia in 2001. Alpine developed him through his academy — he won the F3 and F2 championships in consecutive years, a feat only three drivers had previously achieved. When Alpine announced he would race for them in 2023, Piastri publicly stated he had not agreed to the contract — a dispute resolved in favour of McLaren by the F1 Contract Recognition Board, one of the most public driver contractual disputes in recent F1 history. He made his F1 debut with McLaren in 2023. In 2024 he won three races and finished the season as McLaren's lead championship contender, finishing third overall. His combination of calmness under pressure, technical feedback and one-lap qualifying pace has generated comparisons to Alain Prost in terms of racecraft intelligence. At 23 he is considered one of the two or three most likely drivers to challenge Max Verstappen for future championships.
