Nicole Cusack was born on 26 July 1966 and grew up in the Liverpool district of Sydney, New South Wales. Before taking up netball, she competed at the Australian Age Group Swimming Championships in both 1979 and 1980 in the 100m and 200m backstroke, and also played basketball for the Bankstown Bruins in the late 1980s. Cusack progressed through the Randwick Netball Association, being selected for the New South Wales under-17 team in 1982 and the under-19 Australian Netball Championships team the following year, before holding an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship in 1984 and 1985, during which she represented Australia's under-21 side. Cusack made her senior debut for the Australian Diamonds against New Zealand in Auckland on 26 April 1989, becoming, after Marcia Ella, only the second Indigenous Australian to represent the national team. She went on to represent Australia until 1998, including at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Cusack was inducted into the Netball NSW Hall of Fame in 2007, and moved into coaching following her retirement, becoming a respected figure in the development of the sport across New South Wales.
