Mike Richards was a hard-nosed two-way centre who captained the Philadelphia Flyers before winning back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and 2014.

Michael Richards was born on 11 February 1985 in Kenora, Ontario, Canada, and was not considered a notable prospect until the Kitchener Rangers' general manager travelled to see him play on the recommendation of a friend, leading to his selection in the 2001 OHL Priority Selection. Richards captained Kitchener to the 2003 Memorial Cup championship before the Philadelphia Flyers selected him 24th overall in the 2003 NHL Draft, and he became the Flyers' captain in 2008 at just 23 years old, leading the team to the 2010 Stanley Cup Final. Richards was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 2011, winning back-to-back Stanley Cups with the franchise in 2012 and 2014, becoming one of the most successful two-way centres of his generation. Richards's career ended abruptly in 2015, when the Kings terminated his contract after he was arrested at the Canada-U.S. border for possession of oxycodone without a valid prescription. He later played briefly in the Czech Republic before retiring, his career remembered both for his championship success and the circumstances that brought it to a premature close.
