Mia Hamm was the face of women's football in the United States through the 1990s, winning World Cups in 1991 and 1999 and Olympic gold in 1996 and 2004. At the time of her retirement in 2004, her 158 international goals were the most scored by any player, male or female, in the history of the sport, a record that stood for years and helped establish women's soccer as a mainstream sport in America. She was twice named FIFA World Player of the Year, in 2001 and 2002.
