John Maxwell Homa was born on 19 November 1990 in Burbank, California, to John Homa, an acting instructor, and Bonnie Milstein, and was introduced to golf by his father, the pair regularly hitting balls together at the Griffith Park driving range. Homa attended Valencia High School in Santa Clarita before earning a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley, where he won both the Pac-12 individual title and the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship in 2013, turning professional shortly afterward. Homa endured a difficult stretch early in his professional career, at one point earning just $18,000 in a single season and struggling badly off the tee, before rebuilding his game to win his first PGA Tour title at the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship.
