Marcel Sabitzer is an Austrian footballer and national team captain who was a key player and captain during RB Leipzig's rise to prominence, before moving on to Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
Marcel Sabitzer became the first Austrian player to represent Manchester United when he joined on loan in early 2023, adding to a career CV that already included the Austrian Footballer of the Year award in 2017, the captaincy of both RB Leipzig and the Austrian national team, and more than 100 international caps. He came through several Austrian youth clubs before signing with Admira Wacker in 2009, making his senior debut at 17, and moved to Rapid Wien in 2013. Sabitzer joined RB Leipzig in 2014, immediately loaned back to Red Bull Salzburg for a season in which he recorded 19 goals and 19 assists in 51 appearances. He returned to Leipzig for the 2015-16 season and became a central figure in the club's rapid rise through German football, being named Austrian Footballer of the Year in 2017 and taking over the captaincy in 2020, leading the team to Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal runner-up finishes in his final season at the club. Sabitzer joined Bayern Munich in 2021, reuniting with former Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann, though playing time proved limited, leading to a loan move to Manchester United in early 2023, where he became the first Austrian player to represent the club. He signed permanently with Borussia Dortmund later that year. Sabitzer has captained the Austrian national team and earned over 100 caps, playing a key role in the country's qualification for multiple European Championships, including a strong showing at Euro 2020.
