Magomed Alibulatovich Ankalaev was born on 2 June 1992 in Teletl', a village in the Shamilsky District of Dagestan, Russia, and developed a background in Combat Sambo before transitioning to mixed martial arts, turning professional in 2014. Ankalaev won the World Fighting Championship Akhmat light heavyweight title and the promotion's 2016 Light Heavyweight Grand Prix before signing with the UFC, where he developed into one of the most dominant and avoided contenders in the light heavyweight division, training out of Fight Club Akhmat and later Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas.
