Lynn Curtis Swann was born on 7 March 1952 in Alcoa, Tennessee, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, playing college football at USC, where he earned All-American honours and won a national championship. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Swann in the first round, 21st overall, of the 1974 NFL Draft, and he developed into one of the most graceful and clutch wide receivers in NFL history, renowned for his acrobatic, ballet-inspired catches during the Steelers' dynasty years of the 1970s. Swann delivered one of the most celebrated performances in Super Bowl history at Super Bowl X, catching four passes for 161 yards including a spectacular diving grab, earning Super Bowl MVP honours as Pittsburgh won its second consecutive championship. He won four Super Bowls in total with the Steelers. Swann earned three Pro Bowl selections and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001, later building a prominent career as an ABC Sports broadcaster and serving on the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition. He ran unsuccessfully as the Republican nominee for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2006, and later served as athletic director at USC, his alma mater.
