Leigh Halfpenny is a Welsh fullback and prolific goal-kicker, named Player of the Series on the victorious 2013 Lions tour of Australia.
Stephen Leigh Halfpenny was born on 22 December 1988 in Gorseinon, Swansea, Wales, and attended Pontybrenin Primary School and Penyrheol Comprehensive School before joining the Ospreys' academy. He trained with Neath RFC before signing with the Cardiff Blues, spending the 2007-08 season with feeder club Cardiff RFC. Halfpenny developed into one of the finest goal-kicking full-backs in the history of Welsh rugby, and despite frequent injury interruptions early in his career, earned the trust of national coach Warren Gatland to be included in the squad for the 2011 World Cup. His narrowly missed long-range penalty in the semi-final against France remains one of the tournament's most agonising near-misses for Wales. Halfpenny finished as the 2012 Six Nations' top points scorer, delivering a last-minute winning penalty against Ireland, and went on to become the third-highest points scorer in Welsh rugby history, behind only Neil Jenkins and Stephen Jones. He was selected for the British and Irish Lions in 2009, 2013, and 2017, winning the Player of the Series award on the successful 2013 tour of Australia. Halfpenny played for Toulon in France before returning to Wales with the Scarlets, and later had spells with the Crusaders, Harlequins, and Cardiff Rugby. He earned 101 caps for Wales between 2008 and 2023, cementing his status as one of the most reliable and enduring points-scorers the national team has ever had.
