Laurent Koscielny was born on 10 September 1985 in Tulle, in southwestern France, and progressed through a series of local youth clubs before joining Guingamp's academy in 2003 — a club whose alumni also include Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda. He made his professional debut the following year, initially playing out of position at right-back before a move to Tours in 2007 allowed him to establish himself at his preferred centre-back role. Koscielny's performances at Tours, which included a Ligue 2 Team of the Season selection as the club won promotion, attracted Lorient, who signed him in 2009. His composed, technically sound defending across just one season in Brittany was enough to convince Arsenal to sign him in 2010. Koscielny spent nine seasons at Arsenal, becoming club captain and one of the club's most reliable defenders during a period when consistency at the back was often elusive. He scored a crucial equaliser in the 2014 FA Cup final against Hull City, helping end Arsenal's nine-year wait for a major trophy, and went on to win the FA Cup again along with two Community Shields. Despite being eligible to represent Poland through family heritage, Koscielny chose France, making his debut in 2011 and going on to earn 51 caps, representing his country at Euro 2012, the 2014 World Cup, and Euro 2016, where France reached the final on home soil. He finished his career with two seasons at Bordeaux before retiring in 2022 and later returning to Lorient as a youth coach and sporting director.
