Kathryn Harby-Williams was born on 16 July 1969 in Adelaide, South Australia, and represented Australia for 13 years between 1990 and 2003, playing 95 Tests in her preferred positions of goal defence and wing defence. Regarded as one of the finest defenders of her era, she was named Australian captain in 2000 and led the Diamonds for four years through to her retirement in 2003. Harby-Williams was part of the Australian teams that won World Championship gold in 1995 and 1999 (the latter as a senior leader of the squad) and Commonwealth Games gold in 1998 and 2002, giving her a complete set of major international titles across her career. Domestically she played for the Adelaide Thunderbirds before a brief comeback in New Zealand's National Bank Cup with the Auckland Diamonds, where at 34 she was named the league's most valuable defensive player. She was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2018 for her services to netball as a player, captain, coach, commentator and administrator, and was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame in 2010. She has since built a prominent media career as a netball commentator in New Zealand and Australia and serves as CEO of the Australian Netball Players' Association.
